Spotify Duo Misses the Mark

If you haven’t heard of Spotify Duo, check it out here.  The basic premise is that you can purchase two premium subscriptions for a slightly discounted rate ($14.99/month compared to $10.99/month for the individual subscription).  The catch though is that you must live in the same household, and it’s also on one bill.  It’s basically like a smaller family plan, which they offer too (at $16.99/month).  If you are in a relationship or have a roommate, and you both prefer Spotify over alternatives, this might be a good option for you.  Splitting the bill won’t be too difficult and you’ll save a few dollars per month.

We think Spotify could do a bit better though.  If the goal was to capitalize on referral power, they could make the process more seamless by allowing separate payments methods and allowing users to pair up with people outside their household.  We believe there is a large group of customers (looking in the mirror here), that don’t qualify for family plans or corporate plans, but find the individual subscription unaffordable.  We’d love the option to team up with friends to overcome this.  The content on Spotify is awesome, but bundles like Apple One continue to offer more value in the meantime.
